Sandalwood (Santalum spicatum) is a tree native to Western Australia. It is a rapidly depleting timber commodity with an ever-increasing global market.
Beverley Plantations Limited has started its first ever seed harvest of the valuable sandalwood seed. This harvest is 2 years earlier than anticipated and although the yield will be rather modest, it will provide the first of the "blue sky" revenue streams to the company. Seed producing areas throughout the 200 hectare plantation are rather inconsistent and seed picking will be a long and drawn out process. This is to be expected on such a young plantation. The harvest started on the 10th of November 2008 and we hope to have all the seed de-husked, cleaned and bagged by the end of January, at which time we will know the harvest yield.
