Sandalwood (Santalum spicatum) is a tree native to Western Australia. It is a rapidly depleting timber commodity with an ever-increasing global market.
In 2000 WA Sandalwood Plantations was involved in a 20 hectare trial plantation of Australian sandalwood in York, Western Australia. This project, Willarak, is now well established and has provided an invaluable insight into the mechanics of plantation grown sandalwood, as well as host tree husbandry and weed control.
In 2003 the company established Project 2, a 50 hectare irrigated Australian sandalwood plantation for Eastwood Plantations Pty Ltd on a property in Beverley, Western Australia.
In 2004 the company established Project 3, a further 50 hectares of Australian sandalwood for Southchurch Plantations Pty Ltd, also irrigated. Together, Projects 2 and 3 are the largest irrigated Australian sandalwood plantations in the world. Both of these projects are in excellent condition and are showing rapid growth.
In 2005 WA Sandalwood Plantations established two commercial Australian sandalwood plantation projects totalling 350 hectares. These were Project 4, a 200 hectare plantation for Beverley Plantations Limited, and Project 5, a 150 hectare plantation for a private client. Both of these plantations are in the Beverley area of Western Australia.
In 2006, the company established Project 6, a 100 hectare plantation for West Dale Plantations Pty Ltd.
In 2007, the company established Project 7, a 251 hectare project for North Ridge Plantations Pty Ltd.
In 2008, the company established Projects 8, 9 and 10, being 205 hectares for Emerald Peak Plantations Pty Ltd, together with two private client projects totalling 230 hectares.
In 2009, the company established Project 11, a 185 hectare project for Ballybrook Plantations Pty Ltd.
In 2010, the company will establish Project 12, a 140 hectare project for Avon River and Mindalong Plantations Pty Ltd.
Projects 6-12 are located near Quairading, W.A.
